In short: choose a name, buy hosting that includes a domain, build with an AI builder or WordPress, add the pages customers need, publish, then set up Google Search Console and a Google Business Profile. Most people can have a simple site live in an afternoon.

Step 1: Decide what your website must do

Before spending a rupee, write down the one job your website has. For most small businesses in India it is one of these:

  • Get enquiries: calls, WhatsApp messages or form submissions (consultants, clinics, coaching classes, service businesses).
  • Sell online: take orders and payments (shops, home bakers, boutiques).
  • Build trust and a following: a blog, portfolio or creator site.

This decides which plan and tools you need. An enquiry site needs five good pages. A shop needs product pages, a payment gateway and more server resources.

Step 2: Pick a domain name

Your domain is your address, like yourbusiness.in or yourbusiness.com. Tips that work:

  • Keep it short, easy to spell and easy to say over the phone.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers if you can.
  • .in signals an Indian business; .com is the most familiar worldwide. Either is fine.
  • Do not use someone else's brand name in your domain.

Many hosting plans include a domain for the first year. We explain how that works, and its catches, in how to get a free domain with hosting.

Step 3: Choose hosting

Hosting is the computer that stores your website and shows it to visitors. For a first site, shared web hosting is enough. Look for:

  • An India data centre option, so pages load quickly for local visitors.
  • SSL included (the padlock in the browser).
  • Backups, ideally daily for a business.
  • Clear renewal prices, not just a low first-term price.

We use Hostinger for this site. On 2 Nov 2026, its Premium plan was ₹139/mo and Unlimited ₹199/mo on a 48-month term, renewing at ₹449/mo and ₹649/mo respectively. Compare all four plans in Hostinger plans compared.

Step 4: Claim your domain and set up email

After you pay, log in to the dashboard and use Claim domain to register the domain included with your plan. Then create a professional mailbox like hello@yourbusiness.in. Premium includes 2 mailboxes per website for the first year; Unlimited includes unlimited mailboxes for the first year. A business email address builds far more trust than a free webmail address on your visiting card.

Step 5: Build the site (AI builder or WordPress)

You have two good no-code options:

  • AI website builder: describe your business and get a first draft with text and layout that you edit by dragging and dropping. Fastest way to a good-looking site.
  • WordPress: installs from the dashboard. Slightly more learning, but much more flexible, with thousands of themes and plugins, and the best choice for blogs and larger sites.

Step 6: Add the pages customers expect

A small-business website in India usually needs:

  1. Home: what you do, for whom, where, and one clear button (Call, WhatsApp, Book).
  2. Services or products: with prices or "starting from" prices where you can.
  3. About: who you are, your experience, real photos of you or your shop.
  4. Contact: phone, WhatsApp link, email, address, a Google Map and opening hours.
  5. Privacy policy: especially if you collect names, phone numbers or payments.

Write the way you talk to customers. Mention your city and the areas you serve; that is how local customers search.

If you sell online, connect a payment gateway that supports UPI, cards and net banking. Add clear shipping, refund and cancellation policies, and terms of service. If you collect personal data, explain what you collect and why in your privacy policy. Check with a chartered accountant whether you need GST registration for the way you sell.

Step 8: Publish and get found on Google

  1. Publish and check every page on your phone.
  2. Add your site to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap so Google discovers your pages.
  3. Create or update your Google Business Profile with your website link. For local businesses this often brings more enquiries than anything else.
  4. Share the link on WhatsApp, Instagram and your visiting cards.
  5. Add one helpful page a month, answering questions customers actually ask you.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing hosting on the first-term price alone. Look at the renewal price too.
  • Stock photos everywhere. Real photos of you, your team or your products build more trust.
  • No clear next step. Every page should end with a call, WhatsApp or booking button.
  • Forgetting mobile. Most Indian visitors arrive on a phone. Check every page on one.
  • Never updating. Out-of-date prices and timings cost you customers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to make a website in India?

If you build it yourself, the main costs are hosting and a domain. On 2 Nov 2026, Hostinger's Premium plan cost ₹6,672 upfront for 48 months (₹139/mo) with a domain included for the first year. Hiring a designer adds anywhere from a few thousand rupees to much more, depending on the work.

Can I make a website for free in India?

You can start on a free subdomain with some website builders, but you usually cannot use your own domain name, and you get limited features and branding. For a business, a paid plan with your own domain looks far more trustworthy.

Website kaise banaye?

Short answer in Hinglish: pehle ek domain name chuniye, phir hosting plan lijiye (jaise Hostinger Premium ya Unlimited), dashboard se domain claim kijiye, AI website builder ya WordPress se design banaiye, aur Publish dabaiye. Is guide ke 8 steps follow kijiye.

Can I build a website on my mobile?

You can manage many things from a phone, but designing a website is much easier on a laptop or desktop. Use your phone to check how the finished site looks on mobile.

Do I need GST registration to start a website?

No, you do not need GST registration just to have a website. Whether your business needs GST depends on your turnover and what you sell. Ask a chartered accountant if you plan to sell online.

How long does it take to show up on Google?

It varies. New sites often take days to weeks to be indexed. Submitting your sitemap in Google Search Console and publishing genuinely useful pages helps.
